About Us

“But we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:23-24 (ESV)

We are a Reformed Church in Newcastle NSW seeking to glorify God by trusting, following and proclaiming Christ.

Founded in 1955, our church has had a lot of highs and lows over the years. Through it all God has demonstrated his sovereignty, goodness and grace.

As a church we seek to be:

Gospel-Centered
The Lord Jesus Christ and the good news of his life, death, and resurrection are the heartbeat of our church, anchoring everything we do.

Biblical
We submit our lives and our church culture to the ultimate authority of Scripture, practicing expository preaching that seeks to understand and apply what God’s Word actually says.

Confessional
Rather than chasing modern trends, we find deep stability in standing on the shoulders of generations past, holding firmly to the historic creeds and Reformed confessions that faithfully summarise God’s Word. You can read about our beliefs here.

Relational
We are committed to being a genuine, multigenerational church family where people help one another follow Jesus, share life together, bear one another’s burdens, and are truly known and loved.

Evangelistic
Driven by the life-changing hope of the Gospel, we are dedicated to sharing the rest, grace, and truth found in Jesus with Newcastle and beyond. Find out more about Jesus and the Gospel here.

Whether you are simply exploring the big questions of life, looking for a fresh start after time away from church or want to grow in God’s Word, you are welcome here.

Leadership

Elder: Pieter Visser

Pieter has been part of Newcastle CRC since it’s founding. He is married to Anne and they have a bunch of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pieter is jack of all trades who used to work in electronic repairs but now he is using his retirement to shepherd the members of Newcastle CRC.

Elder: Martyn Thompson

Martyn has happily been a member of Newcastle CRC for several years now. He is married to Bri and they have 2 kids. Martyn works as a teacher at a local Christian school and in his spare time he has been studying a Masters of Divinity at the Reformed Theological College.

Because we are a smaller church we also receive helpful counsel and assistance from Rev. Alan Douma and the Elders of our nearby sister church Tanilba CRC.

What is a Reformed Church?

There is considerable confusion today about what it means to be a Reformed Church. While many use the term, it is not always used in a way that reflects its historic meaning.

A Reformed church is one that joyfully submits to the absolute authority, inspiration, and inerrancy of Holy Scripture as the very Word of God. It stands firmly within the historic Christian faith, holding to the same foundational truths that have been faithfully handed down through the centuries.

More specifically, Reformed churches embrace the theology of the Protestant Reformation. This is expressed not only in a high view of God’s sovereignty, but in a faithful commitment to the biblical doctrines summarised in the historic Reformed confessions—such as the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Belgic Confession, and the Heidelberg Catechism.

These confessions clearly articulate essential biblical truths, including salvation by grace alone through faith alone, the unity of God’s covenant dealings with His people, and the sufficiency of Scripture for all of life and godliness.

In this way, a Reformed church seeks to be both thoroughly biblical and consciously connected to “the faith once for all delivered to the saints.”

Our Denomination

We are a part of the Christian Reformed Churches of Australia (CRCA), a denomination rooted in the Reformed tradition, emphasising the authority of Scripture, the sovereignty of God, and the centrality of Jesus Christ in all of life. Established in 1951 by post-war immigrants from the Netherlands the CRCA seeks to be a contemporary Reformed denomination that is Word-based, Gospel-focused, empowering of local churches, and driven by prayerful urgency. With a strong commitment to biblical teaching, the CRCA is shaped by the historic creeds and confessions of the Reformation.

Being part of the CRCA provides our church with meaningful accountability, valuable assistance and mutual encouragement from other biblical churches around Australia.

Find out more about the CRCA on its website.

Child Protection

At Newcastle CRC we take the safeguarding of children seriously. We do not tolerate any form of abuse. Find more details about our Child Protection Policies and Procedures here.
